What started as an argument over religion at a bar escalated when one man shot another five times overnight, as the victim's sister watched in horror.
Toni Simpson says she was waiting for her brother, Ernest McCullough, 29, in the 3800 block of Van Dyke Avenue at about 4:30 a.m. after a night of drinking at Nancy's Pub. She was listening to the pair argue over religion but never thought it would lead to what happened next.
"He pulled up his shirt and it looked like a knife and it was a gun. He pulled it out and shot him,” she said.
Simpson says she was so shocked that she blacked out after the first two rounds were fired. When she came around she saw her brother covered in blood.
"I said ‘he shot you?’ And he said ‘yeah, he shot me’ and then he fell to the ground," Simpson said.
The victim, who is Christian, was taken to Scripps Mercy Hospital in serious condition but is expected to be okay.
The suspect, who Simpson says was of Muslim faith, remains at large.

I did a quick search today, but did not turn up any more info on this.
Would this be considered a "hate crime" under the newest proposals?
Hi Pewster,
I think it might be a hate crime if a Christian did this to a Muslim. But I doubt it is a hate crime if a Muslim does this to a Christian.
Racial and ethnically based laws are tricky. That's why we need someone on the Supreme Court who know how to make these fine distinctions.
Ofcourse it's a hatecrime, it's a textbook case of a hatecrime. That's why you have hatecrime laws .. sometimes some people just step over that fine line where no arguments can be used and argues with fists, weapons or extortion. It is highly undemocratic.
I also find it strange that you are the only one to cover this story, almost as if you had made it up ;)
Hi karl,
You are right. Good thing the link still works to the MSNBC website with the article posted.
I think the reason this story is not picked up is that it is a Muslim man assaulting a Christian. In the past two weeks we had two stories about white man committing outrageous murders that got picked up almost everywhere: the murder of the abortionist and the murder at the Holocaust Museum. But there was an attack on some soldiers at a recruiting station in the USA in Arkansas that didn't get anything like the same coverage. A Muslim man shot and killed a US soldier in the USA, but it was basically ignored by the media.
